Liberty Counselling offers a complete healing programme especially designed for daughters of narcissistic mothers. Our Liberty Healing Programme has been developed by Michele Engelke, trauma counsellor, cognitive-behavioural and Attachment-Focused EMDR therapist, as well as writer of the self-help books Prisioneiras do Espelho, Um Guia de Liberdade Pessoal para Filhas de Mães Narcisistas (Prisoners of the Mirror, A Guide to Personal Freedom for Daughters of Narcissistic Mothers) e Filhas de Mães Narcisistas, Conhecimento Cura (Daughters of Narcissistic Mothers, Knowledge Heals).
If you believe to have been victim of narcissistic abuse, you know how hard it is to love and accept yourself. When you have grown under the shadow of a narcissist, it is difficult, if not a challenge, to develop a healthy self-esteem.
A life without maternal empathy takes its toll on the strongest of individuals. As opposed to children who have been raised by loving and caring mothers, daughters of narcissistic mothers struggle to find fulfilment in life, be it personally or professionally. Because they are conditioned to focus on the interests and feelings of their mothers, their own developmental process is neglected. Once the daughter of narcissistic mother reaches maturity and sees herself as a lost and confused adult, she realises the impact her narcissistic upbringing has had on her.
Daughters of narcissistic mothers commonly struggle with the following problems:
- Low self-esteem
- Excessive self-criticism
- Guilt, shame and built-up anger
- Dissociation
- Perfectionism
- Codependency
- Lack of self-discipline
- Procrastination
- Self-sabotaging behaviours
- Lack of boundaries
- Unhealthy relationships
- Anxiety
- Depression
Our Liberty Healing Programme is aimed at helping daughters of narcissistic mothers overcome their narcissistic legacy. As a CBT treatment programme, its ultimate focus is on modifying those negative core beliefs, such as ‘I am not good enough’ (‘I am incompetent and/or unloavable’), which are renowned for fuelling feelings of low self-esteem.
